The Tuned Air technology made its first public appearance in 1998 with the Nike Air Max Plus. This cushioning system combines Nike Air with Tuned mechanical elements for high performance impact protection . Using hemispheres, a low pressure Max Air unit is customized to work specifically in the heel, providing cushioning that is tuned for the needs of different athletes and activities. It is made of Pebax, a highly flexible material. The tuned air hemispheres bound quickly when compressed. Variations in their thickns ad placemnt mean the hemispheres guide the foot through a natural landing to provide flexible impact protection and motion control. Tuned Air allows for a softer ride and smoother transition.
